Wrap or Respray Kitchen Cabinets?

We’d always advise that if you want to give your kitchen a makeover on a budget, then the best way to do that is by painting cupboards. However, that all takes time and effort, and a professional finish can be hard to achieve. There are other options out there, including wrapping, or respraying. Could either of those be an option for your makeover, and more importantly – what will it cost?

Kitchen Wrapping – What is It?

Wrapping your kitchen cabinets might conjure up images of paper and Christmas, but it’s altogether more high-tech than that. Kitchen units are wrapped using the same high-spec vinyl which is used to change the colour of a car, or add advertising logos. The vinyl is high performance and shouldn’t peel, scuff or discolour for around a decade. Vinyl comes in every colour of the rainbow, and in matt, gloss and other finishes. The downside is that it’s not a DIY job; you’ll need a degree of skill and expertise to get a smooth and flawless finish. The wrappers will come into your house to do the work, rather than you having to dismantle the whole kitchen.

The cost of having your kitchen units wrapped will depend on the size of your kitchen, and how many units you have. Most companies are reluctant to quote prices online, as they really need to measure up and quote for every job. It can cost as little as £250 for a small galley kitchen to be vinyl wrapped. Always get at least three quotes from reputable local firms to compare and make sure you’re getting a good price for the job.

Getting Your Kitchen Units Resprayed

Respraying your kitchen cupboards is another option, in the same way as you might have your car resprayed. This is a good option in situations where your kitchen is sound, but you’ve just gone off the colour or style. Spray paint can be mixed to any colour of your choosing, and it’s also possible to have the paint matched to any other item you have in the kitchen. The downside to spraying is that it’s often not possible to spray your kitchen doors at home, which means removing them and transporting everything to the sprayshop. Some specialist kitchen spray companies exist in larger towns or cities, but in many situations, your kitchen will be resprayed along with cars and many other items too.

Again, cost will vary according to the size of the job. Get at least a couple of quotes before choosing your preferred supplier. The average cost to respray a standard size kitchen is anything between £1500 and £2000. It’s a lot of money to spend, but a good quality respray can greatly prolong the life of your kitchen and make it more attractive to potential buyers.

What’s right for me?

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, and depending on the finish on your existing kitchen, one might be more successful than others. Approach a few local companies to ask for their advice, or send photographs by email to get their recommendations.
