Plasterers are skilled tradesmen who specialise mainly in solid wall plastering, installing plasterboard or both. If you are looking for some to do either of these jobs then it is important to undertake a few measures before you commit to a certain plasterer.
Using Recommendations When Hiring A Plasterer
The first port of call to find a reliable plasterer is through friends and family. These recommendations give you a true reflection of the quality of work that plasterer does. If you have hired a plasterer without a recommendation you can ask him/her for a reference from someone else and ask to see photos of finished work. At this point, it is worth asking a plasterer whether or not he or she has insurance. Having this is a great benefit , not to mention reassurance to you in case there is any damage to your property during or after the plastering work is completed.
Other Types Of Plastering Quotes
Plasterers often charge by the square metre or square foot. Measure this space before you ask for a quote to help you get an idea of price. A written brief of the work you would like done will allow the plasterer to give you an accurate idea of what the cost will be. A vague idea of what you want will lead to a vague quote and you could be disappointed at the final price you have to pay. Estimates will give you a general idea but if you want an exact cost you will need to ask specifically for a written quote for your project.
Fitting in with your project
Plastering is normally one of the last jobs to be done, particularly on large projects. It is essential that all others have finished their work by the date you have agreed to commence work with your plasterer. Having a room plastered equates to a lot of disruption and mess in your house. Ask the plasterer what he will use to ensure your house does not get covered in dirt and dust.
Qualifications and membership of Trades Associations
To offer yourself further peace of mind it is worth hiring a plasterer who has NVQ or City and Guilds qualifications in plastering but this is not always essential if you have other evidence of his/her work. Many tradesmen are members of the Federation of Plastering and Drywalling Contractors whose website is https://www.fpdc.org/. Again, this acts as a further assurance that plastering will be carried out to a high standard, but bear in mind, some plasterers may choose not to be members of these types of trades associations as they do not want to undertake the financial investment that is often required for membership. Trade assocation membership for plasterers should not be taken as a guarantee of work quality in itself, when choosing who to award your project to.
Can We Help You To Find A Plasterer To Hire?
You can use Top Tradespeople's free tradesmen quotes services to find a plasterer. Use our jobs posting form above and we will look for local plasterers to provide quotes for your work.
When finding any type of tradesman, you should always undertake your own thorough research.
Plastering Job Types
The plastering job type sub-categories you can choose from are as follows, but if your project is not listed just pick the nearest job type and give a good description so that we can match you more easily with local people who may want to quote on your project.
- Fitting plaster coving and plaster corniches
- Building false walls or stud walls, plasterboarding and plaster finishing them.
- Plastering as part of a property refurbishment
- Damp proofing work involving plastering (e.g. tanking plastering)
- General plastering
- Plastering repairs
- Dry lining (plasterboarding)
- Specialist plastering
- Tanking and plastering
- Exterior rendering
- Floor screeding
- Breezeblocks plastered
- Dry lining skimmed
Fitting plaster coving and plaster corniches
Ornate coving and corniches has become popular once again, particularly in period properties. Be careful that you find a tradesman who has an eye for attention to detail when having corniches and covings fitted. This is fairly intricate work and should not really be undertaken by a tradesperson who isn't experienced or may be heavy handed as plaster coving can easily break, which could prove expensive, particularly if it's bespoke.
Building false walls or stud walls, plasterboarding and plaster finishing them
You may need a carpenter or joiner too for this type of project as this involves working with rough sawn timber to create the stud walls. We can help you find carpenters and joiners too from our UK tradesmen network.
Plastering as part of a property refurbishment
When you have a property that you are refurbishing it's likely that you will need a range of local tradesmen. If you're lucky you could find a building company who provide plasterers as part of their team of property refurbishment trades and services and who will project manage the plastering as part of the project. If you're confident that you only need a contractor for this type of work then post a plastering job, otherwise, consider posting this job for a builder who will manage the work.
Damp proofing work involving plastering (e.g. tanking plastering)
Popular for project such as basement and cellar conversions or on properties which are typically damp (e.g. in woody areas or properties which are subject to downwards flow of water, or even just older properties). Again, this is specialised work, which requires the right type of tradesperson on the job. Choose wisely. Check out the tradesmen who want to quote to ensure that they have the necessary experience to carry out damp proofing plastering work. You may even need to bring in the services of a damp proofing contractor, who will no doubt have a good plastering specialist on their team of tradesmen.
This could involve any of the different types of plasterwork that we have mentioned here. Use this job type if you are not sure which of the other types of plasterwork you should choose.
Rendering is quite a specialised type of plastering project. It involves applying several different coats of a special type of plaster, including a 'scratch coat' beneath the main layer of plaster or render, and is ordinarily carried out to the exterior of a house or commercial building. Be sure when you consider the quotes from plastering companies, that they have carried out this type of project before successfully. It's advisable to only have this type of external plasterwork project carried out in the warmer months of the year (e.g. from April through to September).
Sometimes you don't need a full room plastering or even a full wall. If it's simply repairs to existing plasterwork that is required we can still help you find a local plastering service who will help with that. Small jobs are bread and butter for good tradesmen. Post your plaster repair work project and we'll match you with quality tradesmen near you, wherever you are in the UK. You may even find that another type of tradesperson could carry out a small job such as this easily (e.g. a handyman or property maintenance service).
Dry lining (plasterboarding)
Often referred to as 'dot and dab' plastering. It involves apply heavy plaster adhesive to brickwork or block work and then application of plasterboards, the edges of which are covered in scrim (plasterers tape). The boards are levelled and then two coats of plaster are applied. A base coat, followed by a top coat, which is then polished. Dry lining is extremely popular and you should find that most specialists have experience in this type of work. Post your job and we'll find you local tradesmen to compare.
Whilst this may not be very fashionable at the moment, there are still properties that have artexed ceilings and walls and therefore there are still plasterers who are experienced in this type of work. Again, it's specialised and requires a steady hand, particularly if you are looking to match new artexing with existing artex patterns. Check that the tradesmen who want to quote have carried out this type of work before sucessfully. Check customers feedback on them and also ask to see examples of their artexing work.
