Tilers

What are the different types of Exterior Tiles?

The most common types of tiles used indoors and outside are ceramic tiles, which come in many colours, shapes, and sizes. When used outside, ceramic tiles need to be very hard, with a high PEI for durability and strength. Sealing unglazed ceramic tiles can stop them from becoming stained. 

The waterproof properties of porcelain tiles make them ideal for outdoor use. They don't mildew or stain, as they absorb less water, making them more suitable for outdoor use than ceramic tiles.

In contrast to ceramic and porcelain tiles, quarry tiles can only be found in earth tone colours such as red, brown, or gray. They are highly durable and can be used outdoors for patios. Even when wet, their unglazed surface provides good grip, but they are more difficult to clean than other types of tiles.

Sandstone tiles come in a variety of colours, including white, tan, red, grey, and brown. Sandstone is a softer stone that is easy to shape and cut, but it is still highly durable. The only disadvantage is that because sandstone is one of the most porous stones, it absorbs a lot of water and must be sealed to stay waterproof.

Out of all of the stone tiles, granite is one of the strongest. Its natural waterproof capabilities means that it does not stain or absorb oils even without sealing the tile. It is also scratch resistant, easy to clean and almost fully resistant to bacteria making it a perfect choice as an outdoor tiling choice. 

Like most tiles limestone tiles are durable but are also easy to cut and work with. However, because limestone tiles are porous and highly susceptible to acid damage, they must be properly sealed. 

How much do outdoor tiles cost?

The cost of tiles can vary depending on the size of the area, the tiles you choose, and how much preparation is needed before the tiles are laid down. The most popular tile choice, ceramic tiles, are quite cheap and can cost between £15 to £50 per square metre. Porcelain tiles are more costly and can range in the region of £50 to £100. Granite tiles cost between £80 to £90 per square metre, limestone tiles range between £50 and £80 per square metre and quarry tiles cost around £20 to £30 per square metre. 

Additional costs can come from grouting and sealing the tiles which can cost around £20 each. Labour costs can vary depending on the tiler you hire, but the daily rate usually costs between £140 to £200 or between £20 to £40 per square metre.  Make sure to check with the tiler you hire to make sure what is included in the price, so you are not surprised with any extra charges.

Choosing a Tiler
