Bricklaying & Bricklayers

The job of a bricklayer is to build and repair interior and exterior walls of properties as well as other types of brickwork including tunnel walls and chimneys. When it comes to house building, a typical bricklayer’s job would be to construct the initial construct of the building which includes making the walls waterproof, weatherproof and most importantly, secure. Bricklayers have many skills when it comes to brickwork with some skills involving working to architect’s plans, cutting bricks to the right size, laying bricks in courses and adding access holes in walls to connect utilities such as water, electricity and gas into the property.

Bricklayers are not just limited to the single role of building or repairing walls either. House extensions, re-pointing, garden walls, stonework and stone cladding are some of the other services that bricklayers can offer. Over time, weathering and decay can cause cracks or voids in older brickwork which will need repointing. This process renews the external points of mortar joints to stop water from getting into to the property.

Another speciality of some bricklayers is stonemasonry, which can be used for either construction or as a protective and decorative covering for garden walls, a design feature in the garden or for other building projects.

Choosing a Bricklayer

Although someone with decent DIY skills may attempt simple decorative garden walls, complex projects such as retaining walls or building to an architect’s plan are out of the scope for the average DIY fan and will need to be done by a professional for safety reasons. Most bricklayers have trained on building sites and have had extensive experience working on brickwork projects which gives them a breadth of knowledge in brickwork. When choosing a bricklayer, it is good practice to check reviews and previous work so that you can select the right bricklayer for you!
