Thinking of fitting a velux window

Putting a skylight in the roof can make any room seem bigger and brighter. In the UK, we commonly refer to these sorts of windows as Velux, although this is a brand name and other types of windows are available too. If you’re thinking of putting one of these windows in the loft or an extension, can you tackle the job yourself, or do you need to get the professionals in?

Planning permission, building control and Velux windows

In most cases, homeowners don’t need planning permission to put a Velux style window in their roof. This is because the window lies flat against the tiles, and doesn’t alter the appearance of the roof. Rules will be different if you live in a listed building, or in a conservation area. Always check before agreeing to go ahead and knock holes in the roof. Similarly, Building Control might not be interested in adding windows to a loft just being used for storage, but if you want to convert a room to use as a bedroom, you should ensure that it’s all done properly.

DIY or get the professionals in?

If you are confident doing DIY, then putting a Velux window in is probably a job you can tackle yourself. You’ll need basic tools like tape measure, hammer, saw and angle grinder. When you buy the window, it will arrive with full instructions on how to fit them. There are also lots of videos on YouTube taking you through the process step by step. Watch several of these before you start work. Start off by working out where on the inside of the roof your window will fit and remove the boards or felt under the tiles. Remove the slates or tiles carefully until you have made a big enough opening for the window. You’ll then need to cut the rafters, and fit the window in the space, using a frame. The most important part is the waterproofing, making a watertight seal between the windows and the roof.

Cost of Velux window installation

Including the cost of the window, you can expect to pay between £500 and £600 per window. If you’re having more than one window installed, you’ll probably get a better deal than doing them one at a time.

Finding a professional to fit a velux window

If this all sounds like too much hassle, then get a professional tradesperson in to fit the windows for you. As well as being able to complete the job more quickly, professionals can also give valuable advice about the most suitable sizes of windows for your needs. One of the best places to start looking for a skilled Velux window installer is on Top Tradespeople. However, other local roofing companies may do an equally good job so if you have a personally recommended company, ask them to quote too. Try to get at least three quotes for the work and remember that the cheapest quote isn’t always the one which is the best value for money in the long run.
