Space Saving Kitchen Innovations

Not everybody has a huge kitchen, but it is always nice to think of ways of improving what you have and there are lots of ways of making the most out of a confined space.

Read on below for some fantastic ways of saving space in a smaller size kitchen.

Although a kitchen designer will be able to provide you with a number of designs for saving space while transforming your kitchen into a modern, comfortable and practical place, the best person to sort out exactly what you want and how to go about doing it is you.

It is your kitchen and your kitchen renovation is all about providing you with a whole set of needs that you have already been dreaming about for some time.

Before you actually get down and think of a design spend some time moving around your kitchen as you would do normally and consciously think how you use it and what are its advantages and disadvantages.

What Do You Have Already?

As you think about your present kitchen ask yourself some questions about its design.

  • How much bench space do you have and is it enough, too little or too much?
  • Is everything easily accessible without having to stoop down excessively or get onto a chair or ladder to reach up to things up above?
  • How much walking to and fro do you do between the storage places like the fridge and the pantry and where you prepare all your food?
  • What are your drawers and cupboards like? Are they sufficient in number and easily available or too few or too badly situated?

These questions reveal a number of common design issues which can all be addressed by a few customized space saving ideas.

These ideas do not involve great cost or a lot of structural changes in your kitchen.

If you have too much bench top space which you hardly ever use then install a roller fronted storage cabinet in which you can put food like bread or pots and pans.

If you have too little space, then remove your bench top oven or stove if possible and reinstall it under the bench top, freeing up more space.

You could also install a new microwave oven above the bench top on the wall.

Consider installing a kitchen “island” in the middle of your kitchen if you spend too much time walking to and fro between storage areas and preparation areas.

Drawers and cupboards that are badly sited or badly organized can be easily modified with a little thought and a search around the kitchen improvement sections of a home store or department store.

New under bench drawers for pots and pans and drawer organizers and inserts are a few of the many possibilities for better organized space saving storage.

Making a New Space Saving Kitchen Plan

It will now be time to make a plan.

Making a scale drawing or plan of your kitchen should be the next step as it can be used to show to a kitchen designer or builder or just for your own use when working out what size of kitchen accessories you want to purchase or even if you decide to have a total makeover with replacement of your appliances, sink, plumbing, storage and bench space.

You will need a tape measure, some paper and a pencil and, preferably, a long ruler as well.

Measure the entire perimeter of the kitchen and mark on your plan the existing locations of your sink, appliances, bench tops and cupboards and cabinets.

Mark in where all the new modifications should go, starting with the sink.

If you are going to include a new kitchen “island”, then mark in where it should go on the floor plan.

Include any new cabinets, cupboards, shelves and drawers and where any replacement appliances are going to be situated.

Take your detailed space saving renovation plan with you to your nearest custom kitchen showroom or a flat pack store.

You will find that the sales assistants in these places are more than happy to help you with your search for exactly what you want and will probably give you more than enough extra space saving ideas into the bargain.

Led lights are being widely used in many places now. Why don't you start to use them for your kitchen?
