Bathroom Colour Trends

Thinking about giving your bathroom a bit of a makeover? One of the quickest and easiest ways to ring the changes is with a coat of paint, new blind or accessories. Just like everything in fashion, colours falls in and out of fashion, so what’s hot for bathrooms in 2019 and 2020?

Dramatic Black

If you want a dramatic bathroom which makes an impact, one of the most up to date looks is to go for black. This is not a colour suitable for every bathroom; it works best in rooms with high ceilings and lots of natural light. If your flooring is light and your bathroom suite is white, then the black creates a strong contrast. If a whole black bathroom is just a bit too much, then using black on one wall only can give a similar effect.

Ombre Paint

Ombre is the style when one colour gradually fades into another, and it’s an effect which is really easy to achieve on a bathroom wall. It works best starting with a darker shade at the top of the wall, then gradually adding white paint to lighten the shade as you paint down the wall. Look online for inspiration, and “how to” videos explaining the technique. Try to blend each colour together rather than creating a harsh line between shades.

Coral and Grey

Pink bathrooms are back, but we’re not ready to see the return of the pink bathroom suite quite yet. Pink and grey is a great colour combination for a vintage style bathroom. Choose grey tiles or flooring and keep the coral for the walls. Paint is easier to replace than flooring if you want a change in a few years’ time. If you want the look without the hassle of decorating, scour the shops for pale pink towels and artwork which can be used to modernise even the most dated space.

Metallics

Chrome isn’t anything new in bathroom design, but other metallic shades are rapidly overtaking it in the style stakes. Copper is everywhere at the moment, and looks particularly good matched with grey or navy. Brass is a look which never goes out of date, and works best in period properties with Victorian style bathroom suites. There’s even rose gold, should you want to embrace a much more contemporary look.

Wallpaper in the Bathroom

There’s no reason why you can’t use bright and colourful wallpaper in the bathroom. This works best in rooms with very plain tiles around most of the room. If you have limited wallspace, rather than painting it, choose a vibrant paper instead. You won’t need much, so push the boat out and look at the designer ranges as well as what is available locally. Hanging wallpaper isn’t difficult but can be tricky if you haven’t done it before. You don’t need to buy special wallpaper for the bathroom, but the special splash proof papers are ideal. Always check that the paper is suitable for use in humid areas.
