Monmouthshire tradesmen Quotes

Job - 4.8m Garden retaining wall, with 3.6m return wall and steps. Mid-terrace, central Abergavenny., Outbuildings garden buildings

Construction of a garden retaining wall with return wall and steps. The main wall is 4.8m long by 1.1m high approximately. At one end, a return retaining wall starting at the same height and stepping down to level over the 3.6m length. At the opposite end, a set of steps to the higher level. I am flexible on materials, although the neighbour has a painted breeze-block wall which would be adequate. I am seeking a quote for the wall only, with an incremental quote for coping stones on top. This is the garden of a mid-terrace property; it his higher than the level of the house, and I am terracing it to reduce a slope to more useful levels. I have excavated the lowest level, but have not dug foundation trenches. Access is via a mid-terrace tunnel and back-terrace path. Garden hose and electricity available on site. After the wall has been built, I will level the mound of earth above the wall. Initially both areas will be laid to grass.

Advice On Finding Good Tradesmen

  1. Always try to get three quotes from tradesmen for home improvement work.
  2. Ask for written quotes from tradespeople.
  3. Ask what guarantees the tradesperson gives on their work.
  4. Get the tradesperson's address in case of query - A quote scribbled on paper is a bad sign.
  5. Be patient and compare quotes
  6. Try to be objective - most tradesmen will be keen to please when quoting especially in a competitive tradesperson's marketplace.
  7. Be clear on what you want quotes on. Vague quote specifications can lead to disputes with tradesmen and misunderstandings over what was included in your quote and what wasn't.
  8. Check whether tradesmen have reviews on past work. If they don't have any reviews, ask for references from past customers.
  9. Ask if they have any examples of their work so that you can get an idea of the quality of workmanship.
  10. See if they can get you trade discounts on materials for your home improvements.
