There are a number of terms that are commonly used that have to do with the field of plumbing. Many people are unfamiliar with these plumbing terms, and in fact, these terms sometimes vary somewhat depending on the person and country of origin. This glossary is meant to provide a brief overview of some of the more common plumbing terms and plumbing definitions.
Device that is installed on a water faucet, which is responsible for mixing air into the water flow, as well as reducing splashing and sometimes reducing the overall flow of the water.
An air bubble in the line on the suction side of a pump can cause a blockage in the water's flow, which is known as an air lock.
A shut off valve that is placed between a faucet and the water pipes, to be used to shut off the water in case an emergency repair is necessary.
Water that flows back into the water supply, from anything other than its intended source. Back flow preventers are devices used to prevent this problem.
An overflow caused by a drain stoppage in a plumbing fixture.
A valve in the sewer line which prevents sewage flowing back into the home.
The process of removing excess air from a pipe, hose or tube by opening a valve.
Device installed in a pipe that allows water to only flow in one direction to prevent backflow.
A plug that can be used to clear an obstruction in a drain pipe or trap.
Valves, often used in tubs, sinks and shower installations, which direct the water to various outlets.
A fitting designed to receive another fitting or pipe.
Devices such as sinks, tubs and toilets that provide a water supply or handle the disposal of water.
A paste which is applied to fittings and copper pipes before soldering is performed, which prevents oxidation and helps with the soldering process.
A common style of toilet that depends on the downward pressure of water to achieve a flush.
Waste waters from sources other than toilets, such as showers, bathtubs and sinks.
The main water supply, from which all other branches connect.
The threads that are on the outside surface of fittings or pipes.
Round rubber washer, used primarily around valve stems, which are designed to create a watertight seal.
Substance which can be used to create a watertight seal, which is applied to threaded fittings.
A pliable putty which can be used between drain pieces and fixtures to seal the joints.
The house drain which carries waste water away from the house towards a septic tank or sewer system.
Large vertical drain line which carries waste to the sewer line.
Another term for soldering pipes together.
The curved section of a drain line that prevents the escape of sewer odors. Toilets have an S trap, while other fixtures have a P trap.
