Plastering goes back a long way and it has certainly stood the test of time, with plaster in one form or another dating back to over 4,000 years ago right back to the days when primitive man used a type of mud mix applied over a structure of sticks to compose a durable weatherproof coating to his hut.
The Greeks used plaster for both external and internal works. This external work with plaster shows the early days of rendering or stucco as it is commonly know today and adorns many a house (often hiding a multitude of sins beneath its surface).
All through the ages plaster has been applied to sticks, timber or reeds (dependent upon the century of the time) which is the beginnings of 'lath and plastering' which is still evident in many modern homes today.
Today plastering has evolved with many plasterers using plastering materials to great effect. Simple plastering and emulsioning of interior rooms not so long ago replaced the flambouyant wallpapers and the woodchip coverings.
As plastering materials developed over the years, and in particular with the development of the plasterboard many homeowners simply chose to rip off their old wallpapers and crumbling dried out plaster and lath and plaster. Replacing the timber lath structures with false walls and ceiling made with timber batons and plasterboards and simply had them skimmed over with a top coat of multifinish skimming plaster or similar.
Once dried, cleanly emulsioned walls have become very popular and modern.
