The history of tiling seems to date back to the ancient Greece where originally tiles in a form were used for roofing, although some decorative tiled type work has been found in ancient pyramids.
The tiles used by the Greeks to tile roofs were very bulky and expensive to produce however they made roofs watertight and were much more resistant to fire than the more common thatched roofs. Roofing tiles were used largely for the Greeks precious temples as roofing tiles were very expensive to produce and very labour intensive (tiles were made and fitted by hand in those days) to make and fit and therefore something of a luxury of the time, reserved for special buildings only.
Evidence of tiling styles in Roman times seem to imply that the tiling style was very random, mosaic tiling. Tiling was used for more practical purposes in Roman times originally with tiles used largely to form walkways and flooring. Over the years tiling became more decorative and aesthetically pleasing rather than functional.
Tiling in modern times is mass market. No longer are tiles generally manufactured by hand (although some bespoke tiling manufacturers and eco-friendly tiling companies do exist). Tiles are produced now with machinery and en masse. Tiling to kitchens and bathrooms and the standard ceramic tile has become commonplace in the average home. Tiling is now a large part of any bathroom or kitchen decoration and styles have become extensive.
