Tiling DIY Advice And Tips - What Tiling Adhesive Do I Need For My Tiling Jobs?

The importance of using the right type of tiling adhesive on tiling jobs Using the right kind of tiling adhesive is essential for the success of your tiling project.

Your tiling job will fail to be a success if you don’t make the right choices when it comes to adhesive and could be very costly. You may even have to replace your tiles if you do not stick them properly with the right materials for the job.

The first thing you need to consider when choosing the right kind of adhesive for your tiling job is where are you putting the tiles? Are they going on the wall, on the floor, inside, outside, in areas where they will come into contact with lots of water such as bathrooms or kitchen splashback areas? Another consideration is what type of surface will your tiles be being fixed to? Timber, concrete, plyboard, floorboards, asphalt, tile backerboard (usually inside) on walls, plasterboard or plaster?

Once you have established the surface and the environment where your tiles will be fixed we can talk about which types of tiling adhesive is suitable for the conditions and purpose for which they are being used.

Different types of wall tiling adhesive

Here are some of the different types of tiles, their corresponding suitable tiling adhesive and where they should be used:

Wall tiling being fixed to plaster

One of the easiest to answer.  Most cement based wall tiling compounds and suitable grout can be used to fix wall tiles to plaster.  Found at most hardware or DIY stores.  Ensure that you take the type of wall tile into consideration - be it ceramic, mosaic or stone tiles.

Wall tiling being fixed to plasterboard

To fix tiling to plasterboard you should look for special plasterboard tiling adhesive.

Wall tiling being fixed to tile backerboard

As with plasterboard it is always wise to look for tiling adhesive which is suitable for tiling onto backerboard rather than straight onto plaster.

Different types of floor tiling adhesive

Floor tiling being fixed to plyboard or other suitable lining timber

Most floor tiling adhesive is suitable for tiling onto plyboard or suitable lining timbers. You should pay careful attention to what type of tiles you are laying whether it be ceramic, porcelain or stone

Floor tiling being fixed to floorboards

This can be done but it is always best to seek professional advice from tilers on this one as tiling onto floorboards can be difficult regardless of the type of tiling adhesive you use. It is normally recommended that you use some type of timber liner to ensure that the floor is perfectly level before tiling. There may be a little additional cost here but it is cheaper than having to take all the tiles up because they failed to remain on the floorboards for any length of time.

Floor tiling being fixed to concrete

You should use a cement based tiling adhesive which is suitable to be grouted up to 12mm thick grout width. Be careful to ensure that product you select for your wall or floor tiling job is suitable for the type of tile you are using, be it stone, mosaic or ceramic type tiles. Needs to be waterproof for external and interal use.

Floor tiling being fixed to stone externally

You should use a cement based tiling adhesive which is suitable to be grouted up to 12mm thick grout width. Needs to be waterproof for external and internal use.

Swimming pool and wet room tiling

You should use an epoxy type adhesive and appropriate similar type of grout. These types of tiling adhesives are used in wet areas including swimming pools or wet rooms. They are also suitable for areas where high standards of hygiene is required. You need to use a resin which is free of solvents and is obviously waterproof and in particular for external areas is frost proof too.

Tiling onto existing floor or wall tiles

Not really recommended but can be done. Just make sure that the walls and floor are clear of all dirt, grease and foreign bodies, use the same type of wall or floor tiling adhesive that you would normally use and ensure that the tiles which you are tiling onto have been scuffed up to ensure that the new tiling adhesive and tiles can get a grip of the surface otherwise they will just fall off.
