Electricians - Electrical Advice & Tips - How To Change A Light Fitting

Electricians Jobs - Always Safety First And Foremost On Electrical Work

Whenever you are considering working on electric wiring, safety should be your first consideration.  Changing a light fitting is a fairly simple project but the proper safety precautions should be observed. Before beginning electrical work, look up building regulations in Part P of the building codes; this will tell you whether you need to apply for permission prior to starting work. Once you have determined permission status, it is time to change the light fitting.

Electricians Jobs - Changing The Light Fitting

To change a light fitting, first turn off power for the light fitting.Turning power off at the light switch is not adequate; you must turn off the main switch on the consumer unit and remove the fuse. Unscrew the cover on the old light fitting. Once the wires are exposed, it is a good idea to test for current with a contact tester to be sure you have turned off the correct circuit. After removing the cover, you will find either new wiring colors of brown and blue or the old wiring of red and black. In the old wiring scheme for light fittings, red is live and neutral is black. For the new wiring scheme for light fittings, brown is live and blue is neutral. In both wiring schemes, earth is green and yellow. You may find multiple live and ground wires depending on the wiring to that particular light fitting. If there are multiple live wires, join them together in a terminal block and cover with insulation tape. There will be one live wire that goes to the switch, usually a black wire with a red band.

Electricians Jobs - Read All Electrical Fitting Instructions Carefully

Read instructions on the new light fitting carefully before going any further. Install the fixing bracket using the appropriate attaching methods. The fixing bracket must be installed securely and for some light fittings must be installed square to the wall (or ceiling if working on a wall fitting). To check for square, take a measurement from each end of bracket to wall or ceiling respectively

Now you are ready to connect wires to the new light fitting. The switch live wire attaches to the live terminal on the lamp (marked L) and the neutral wires (either black or blue) are attached to the neutral terminal (marked N). The green and yellow earth wire is attached to the neutral terminal, which is marked with an earth symbol. Be sure all the wires are tight and then attach light fitting to the bracket making sure that the wires are not bent and kinked. Once the light fitting is attached, restore power to the circuit and check the new light fitting works.
