Whether you are starting out as a repairperson or you are a homeowner planning a little DIY, tools and equipment are an integral part of making your building  project a success.  Building and construction may mean many different types of tools; this article will tell you the basic tools and equipment building work requires.

First and foremost, every tool collection should contain safety equipment.  Basic safety tools and equipment include safety goggles, ear protection, gloves, kneepads and in some situations a hard hat.  If you will be primarily building outside, you may want to have tinted safety glasses similar to sunglasses to keep light from interfering with sight.  For ear protection, you may choose earplugs or more substantial headphone-style ear protection depending on the tools and noise near your building work.

The next category of tools and equipment is measuring tools.  Measuring tools include tape measures, box rulers and levels.  A tape measure is the most basic and most used measuring tool in building; it is especially handy when taking large measurements.  When an accurate interior measurement is necessary, a box ruler is a better tool.  Levels are important for all types of jobs from something as simple as hanging a picture to something as complicated as installing a door.  It is typical to have a number of different length spirit levels in a tool collection for building but with the advent of laser levels, it is possible to switch entirely to digital levels.  However, traditional spirit levels are a cheaper investment.

When involved with building, both as a professional and as a homeowner, deconstructing or demolition is part of almost every project.  Demolition tools and equipment include tools like pry bars and sledgehammers.  Additional demolition tools include reciprocating saws and chisels.

Cutting tools are the next category of tools necessary for building.  There are many different saws both manual and powered and depending on the type of building, you may want to choose a specialized saw.  Nevertheless, the most typical powered saws to have in your tool collection are circular saw, miter saw and table saw.  These powered saws may be corded or cordless depending on the total investment you can afford.  It is always helpful to have a few manual saws as well; a crosscut handsaw and a hacksaw are extremely useful to have in your tool collection.  Drills could also fall into the category of cutting tools since they remove material.  Drills also may be corded or cordless although the trend is definitely toward cordless.

Another category for tools and equipment is attaching tools.  Hammers and screw guns are the most common attaching tools.  Cordless screw guns are getting more powerful and lighter and are becoming the industry norm.

Every building tool collection needs to have an assortment of hand tools as well.  Screwdrivers, spanners, wrenches in various sizes are always helpful to have in a collection of building tools and equipment.

Filling a building tool collection with the essential tools and equipment is a good start but with the large variety of tools and the new technologies, you may find your tool collection growing on a daily basis.
