Plasterers - What Different Kinds Of Plastering Materials Are There?

There are many different kinds of plasterers materials. Here are just some of the materials plasterers use and also plasterers jobs used on plasterers jobs.

Browning Plaster

A bottom coat of plaster used before the top coats such as multifinish plaster, plasterboard finish or skimming plaster.

Bonding Plaster

Similar to browning plaster. Often used as a basecoat for plastering jobs.

Skimming Plaster

A top coat of plaster used to add a very thin layer of plaster as a top finish or to enhance existing plaster.

Multifinish Plaster

Similar to skimming plaster. As the name, multifinish plaster, implies, multifinish is so called because it can be applied to a multitude of base coats - e.g. plasterboard, browning plaster, bonding plaster. Used widely by plasterers on plastering jobs.

Plasterboard

As the name implies, boards made of gypsum plaster and used to overlay existing walls or used when creating false or stud walls and then plastered with multifinish or skimming plaster.

Plasterers Scrim or Plasterers Tape

A type of adhesive tape used by plasterers to secure together plasterboards of used when repairing plasterwork.

Drywall screws or Plasterboard Screws

Used to hold in place plasterboards and used primarily when securing plasterboards onto timber battons for either making false ceilings or stud walls.

Drywall adhesive

Used to secure plasterboards to concrete blocks or existing brickwork. Known widely amongst plastering tradesmen as 'dot and dabbing', large dots of drywall adhesive are placed on the wall and the plasterboard is then placed in place by plasterers prior to plastering.

Backing plaster

A base coat of plaster used before final finish with plaster such as multifinish or skimming plaster.

Tanking plaster

A base of plaster used in damp conditions such as basement conversions, cellar conversions or areas where there are thick stone walls which hold moisture.

Tile backerboard

A kind of plasterboard used primarily on walls to level them out prior to tiling.

Artexing plaster

A very heavy gypsum plaster which was primarily used in the last decade for ornate purposes. Very difficult to remove and also almost obsolete. Can contain traces of asbestos so samples should be checked prior to removal of large quantities of artexing plaster.

Rendering plaster

A plaster used for externally plastering properties and quite popular. Can hide ugly brickwork in addition to be being the choice of external decoration for some homeowners. Once rendered the rendering plaster is usually painted to create an attractive decorative home exterior finish.

Tyrolean Flicker Gun

A tool used to apply a decorative finish to rendering.
