Plastering Advice And Tips - Tools Needed In Rendering

Rendering is the name for the cement finish used on exterior walls. Although rendering can be finished in a number of different textures such as roughcast, pebbledash or tyrolean, rendering the scratch coat in all cases will require the same tools. The tools and equipment needed for rendering are very similar to the tools and equipment needed for plastering, however, exterior rendering dries much faster than interior plaster and the temperature must be above 60 degrees and the surface must be protected from rain until cured.

The tools needed for preparing the wall for rendering are a hammer and chisel. Rendering mortar adheres best to a rough surface. Use the hammer and chisel to remove any loose brick or block and then create a textured surface for the render.

Once the surface is prepared, the tools and equipment needed to render the wall are a bucket, mixing stick, trowel or mixing paddle for a power drill. If mixing a large amount, a cement mixer will save time and energy. After mixing, you will need a shovel and wheelbarrow to move render mortar to the work area. Render becomes very heavy to carry and transport so the wheelbarrow is a tool that will really assist in saving energy for the render process. In order to keep the render at a consistent depth, 10mm, battens are applied to the wall every 900mm and results in bays that are rendered with the battens as a depth gauge. Use a spirit level to level the battens before securing it to the wall. Once the battens are applied, and the material is at the wall to be rendered, use a plasterers trowel and a hawk to hold the render mixture near the wall. A hawk is a metal square with a handle mounted under the center of the square. The render is applied to the proper depth and then a straight edge or darby is used in a sawing motion pressing against the battens to level off the render. After leveling render, use the trowel to scratch a diamond pattern in render to prepare for the next coat. In addition to the basic tools for rendering, you may need a ladder or scaffolding to reach higher areas of the wall.

Allow render to cure for one week while protecting from rain and moisture. It is useful to have tarps and straps to protect walls from rain. The finish coat can be applied in any texture once the render has cured.
