How To Protect Your Home
Ways To Protect Your Home
If you own a home, protecting your investment and your family is something that should concern you. There are a few different methods that you can use to accomplish your goals.
Protecting Your Home from Criminals
Perhaps the biggest concern most homeowners face is keeping their home safe from criminals. One of the best ways – and perhaps the oldest method – is using a guard dog. Most people prefer using larger breeds because they are more intimidating. Ideally, the dog should be trained so that it doesn't just bark, run and hide, and let an intruder into your home. Also, a dog that has to be chained up is of little benefit to you if an intruder breaks into your home. Dogs that are used for protection must be able to freely move throughout the home and yard.
Dogs have sensitive ears and can pick up on sounds before a security system alerts you to the presence of an intruder. If an intruder somehow disables your security system, a dog is a great failsafe and can alert you to the intruder's presence.
Computers for Security
The webcam on your computer can be also used for security in your home. By installing certain software it's easy to turn a computer into a home security system. For additional range you can also buy additional cameras for the outside of your windows and doors. Making cameras visible as a deterrent is a good idea; however, hiding some cameras will prevent criminals from disabling your whole security system. Using both wired and wireless cameras gives you the best of both worlds. Also, set up motion detectors equipped with lights as an added deterrent.
Other added benefits of using your computer to run your security system are cost and mobility. Since you more than likely already have a computer, all you have to buy is cameras, software, and motion detectors. You also can go mobile by having security alerts sent to your phone or any computer you are using away from home. For example, you can easily be alerted at work via your work computer if someone is trying to break into your home; the same alerts can be sent to your phone if you are out with your family.
Don't Let Criminals Window Shop
One of the biggest mistake homeowners make is letting criminals see what's inside their home. Don't leave your windows wide open trying to impress your neighbors with your new 60-inch television. When throwing out boxes those high-priced items came in cut the boxes up and put the pieces in garbage bags. If thieves don't know what's inside your home, they are less likely to make your home a target.
Another Threat To Your Home Security
House fires are another threat to worry about. Buy smoke detectors and make sure that they are functioning and have at least one fire extinguisher on hand. Even if the batteries don't need to be changed, test the smoke detectors at least once a week. Map out an escape route in the event of a fire and invest in portable rope ladders for the upper floors of your home. These ladders can prevent serious injuries if family members have no other choice but to use upper-level windows to escape a house fire. Go over fire safety with your family so that they know what to do and what not to do in case of a fire.
Putting it All Together
Some people will simply choose to get a dog to secure their homes, while others may just opt for a home security system. There are others who may choose both options. When it comes to fire safety, make sure to follow the above tips if you are serious about protecting your home and your family.
