Electrical - Follow Safety Rules In Electrics Electrical Work

It is not essential to be a qualified electrician if you want to work on your home electric system however there are certain rules that must be adhered to if you are going to work safely and legally within your electrical system. Whilst this list is certainly not comprehensive here are the basics of working safely on electrics.

Electricity Is Very Dangerous - Always Tread Cautiously When Working With Electrics

Due care and attention must always be at the forefront of your mind when working with electrics. If in doubt at any point do not hesitate to call in a professional, qualified electrician. It is much better to be safe than sorry as the old saying goes. Always take things when working with electrics step-by-step and do not attempt to cut corners as quite literally that could lead to death, harsh though it may sound.

Do Some Research On Electrics, Electricity And Electricians Jobs

Before you undertake an electrical task do some research. If you are a DIY homeowner this does not make you an electrician. However, the basic tasks such as changing light fittings, changing socket fronts and switch fronts and the like can easily be researched on the internet and carried out competently with a little study on the subject of electrics by most competent, intelligent homeowners. Certainly, it would be unwise to undertake a full re-wire of your property as your first DIY electricians job.

Disable Your Electricity Supply

Ensure that your electricity supply is disabled at the source before you even start touching anything to do with your electrical job. The main source is located at the consumer unit, or fuse box as it was more traditionally known. Ensure that the consumer unit is switched off completely before starting any kind of work.

Protect Yourself When Working With Electrics

Always protect yourself even further by using insulating tools, for example, screwdrivers with rubber handles and especially designed for work done by electricians and weare rubber soled shoes to earth yourself when carrying out any electrical jobs.

Check Electrical Fuses

Check fuses and breakers are correct for the type of appliance you are connecting or working on before starting work.

Check Electrical Cables

Check cables are in good working order without damage when working on cables to ensure no live electricity can cause damage due to broken wires and cables. If a cable, flex or wire is damaged never attempt to repair it. Always replace damaged cables. The same too applies for faulty sockets, switches and electrical appliances.

Working Outside With Electrics

When working outside with electrics ensure that your tools have a breaker or RCD as it is known in the trade.

These are just a few of the issues when working with electrics that you should and must consider before starting your electrical job. There are many more and as mentioned earlier it is wiser to study up on the subject of electrics before embarking on jobs of this nature. Alternatively, call a professional, qualifed electrician and save the DIY for one of the safer construction trades.
